How it works

The whole thing, door by door.

A reformer class on Tuesday and a sauna on Thursday used to mean two sign-ups and two memberships, while both classes ran with seats to spare. hoppir is the bit in between. Here is the whole of it, in the order you meet it: the map, the booking, the door, and everything after.

Door one

Open the map.

hoppir opens on what is on, not on a sign-up form. Everything in this first door happens before you have an account.

  1. Step 1. Get hoppir and open it

There is no sign-up wall. The app opens on the map with studios, classes, times and both prices already on it, and you tell us nothing until you want to book. When you do sign in there is no password to invent, just Apple, Google, or a six-digit code we email you, and everything you were looking at comes with you.

  2. Step 2. The map, and the day strip

Every pin is a partner studio, and the number on it is how many classes it has that day. Narrow by day, by a time window, and by discipline. There is no distance filter and no price filter: the map is the distance, and the price is on the class.

    14 days ahead
  3. Step 3. What a class costs, and why

Classes are priced in credits, and one credit is R10 flat. The studio sets the number, class by class, so a busy Friday evening can cost more than a quiet Tuesday morning. hoppir adds nothing on top, no surge and no booking fee, and both numbers sit on the class before you tap anything.

    10–45 credits · 1 credit = R10
  4. Step 4. Who is teaching, and where the door is

Every class names its instructor, and their bio is a tap away. Studios carry star ratings and written reviews from members who have actually been. And each venue carries its own directions to the entrance you walk through, written by the studio, because a pin on a building is not the same as a door.

Explore, as it opens. Every pin is a partner studio; the number on it is that day's classes.
Door two

Book it. Credits, or just the one class.

Every class shows both prices, and the Book button asks which you want. Nothing about the seat changes with the answer.

  1. Step 5. Book: two ways, one seat

Tap Book and hoppir asks how you want to pay: credits from your membership, or pay for that one class outright by card or Apple Pay. Same seat, same class, same price on the class. Neither card is dimmed and neither is hidden. If your balance is short, paying outright is simply the one already selected.

    R8.90–R9.50 a credit on a membership · R10 paying per class
  2. Step 6. If it is full: the waitlist

Join the list and hoppir watches the seat. When someone cancels more than 24 hours out, the first person on the list who has the credits gets that seat booked for them, automatically, with nothing to accept and no window to claim it in. The credits leave your wallet at that moment. Short of credits and we move past you, and you keep your place. It runs on credits only, and nothing buzzes your phone yet, so look before you set off.

  3. Step 7. The 24-hour rule

Cancel more than 24 hours before a class and your credits come straight back, or, if you paid for that one class, the payment goes back to the card you used. Later than that, or simply not turning up, and it is spent either way. The same 24 hours applies at every studio on hoppir; no studio sets its own.

Door three

Walk in. Your screen goes green.

The last thirty seconds of the whole thing, and the studio does nothing at all for it.

  1. Step 8. Check in at the stand

You scan, you are not scanned. There is a printed hoppir stand on the reception counter: open your booking, tap Check in, point your camera at it, or type the short code on it. No stand? Show your own eight-character booking code and someone at the desk types it in. The studio needs no device, no login and nothing to install.

    Opens 1 h before · closes 1 h after · usually within about 250 m
  2. Step 9. The green screen

Your screen goes green with your class on it. That is what you hold up walking in: no queue, no card, no paperwork. hoppir works out how far away you are to let you check in, and keeps only that distance: your coordinates are never stored.

Try it right here

This is the whole booking flow.

No sign-up, no download. Press the button and walk through exactly what the app does: the moment it asks how you want to pay, and the scan at reception that gets you through the door.

  • Both prices are shown before you commit: credits, or paid outright
  • Seats are live: what you see is what’s left
  • Check-in opens an hour before and closes an hour after: scan the hoppir stand at reception

A class’s price is simply its credit cost at hoppir’s peg of 1 credit = R10. There is no cash premium, no surge, and the price you see includes VAT. Card and Apple Pay go live with the app.

And then

The rest of it.

The things you find out in month two: what happens to credits you did not use, how to start a month early, and how to leave.

  • Your wallet, month to month

One balance, and a plain list of everything that has moved through it. Unused credits roll over for a month. Your balance tops out at two months' worth, and the oldest credits are always spent first.

Rolls over 1 month · capped at 2 months
  • Running low? Start next month now

Pay your plan price there and then and the new credits arrive immediately, with your renewal date moving to today. Anything you had not used still rolls over. It is also how you change plan; there is no separate mid-month switch.

    Once a day at most
  • Cancel whenever

A membership runs to the end of the month you have paid for and then stops. No cancellation fee, no fixed term, and you keep the credits that month included until it ends.

  • Send someone a class

Share a class with anyone and they get a real page for it: the studio, the time, who is teaching, the live seat count and both prices. An “Open in hoppir” button on that page hands the class to the app, for anyone who already has it.

  • Get help inside the app

There is a support thread on your account screen, and a person answers it. There is a searchable set of answers in there too, for the things you would rather not wait for.

  • On your home screen, and your wrist

Your next class sits in a home-screen widget, small, medium or on the lock screen, with widgets for your credits and for jumping straight in. There is an Apple Watch companion too, showing the day you have booked.

Plainly

What hoppir does not do.

Three things worth saying out loud, because assuming any of them would cost you a class.

  • Nothing buzzes your phone

hoppir sends no push notifications at all yet: not for a booking, not for a cancellation, and not when a waitlist seat is booked for you. You will see it the next time you open the app, so have a look before you set off.

  • Nothing to stream

There are no on-demand classes, no videos and no digital content of any kind. Credits buy a seat in a real class at a real studio, and that is the whole product.

  • No cap on where you go

There is no limit on how often you can visit one studio, on any plan. A studio that wants to slow things down sets the credit price of its own classes. That is its lever, and it is the only one.
